Context and symbolism

What Rest, the Querent is about

Rest is card 8 in the Grand Etteilla, and it's also the card for the person asking the question if she's a woman. In Etteilla's creation sequence, this is the seventh day, the day of rest after the work of making the world. That's a lovely way to frame a card that stands for the person asking. As well as standing for a woman asking, it brings the theme of rest, receptivity and taking a breath after effort.

In everyday life

Rest, as a card, is about rest that you actually allow yourself. Lots of us feel guilty when we stop. But rest isn't a reward for finishing everything. It's part of how you keep going. This card also invites you to be receptive, to listen, take in and let things come to you instead of always chasing. That's a different kind of strength. Being receptive also means letting good things in. Compliments, help, kindness, beauty. If you're always on the go, it's easy to miss them. A slower pace gives them time to land, and you might find there's more support around you than you'd realised.

  • 8. Rest, the Querent

Maybe you've been working through your lunch break every day. Taking a proper break today, away from your desk, is a small act of rest.

  • 8. Rest, the Querent

Or you've been trying to force an answer to a problem. Stepping back and letting it simmer for a day might help the answer come more easily.

Love, work and money

Rest, the Querent in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, Rest, the card for a woman asking the question, invites stillness and receptivity. It can stand for a woman asking the question. For example, if you've been chasing answers about a relationship, try pausing for a week and just noticing how you feel. Listening, to yourself and to the other person, can tell you more than pushing.

At work and in study

At work, Rest asks for a pause before action. Say you're about to make a hasty decision on a project. Sleep on it. It also reminds you that rest is part of productive work, so take your full lunch break and your holidays. Good decisions often come after rest, not during exhaustion.

With money and resources

With money, Rest asks you to stop and receive. For example, before making any new financial move, take a week to see how things settle. If money is coming to you, like a refund or a bonus, let it arrive and sit for a while before deciding what to do with it.

Upside down

Rest, the Querent reversed: La Questionnante

The reversed keyword printed on the card is La Questionnante, "the female questioner". Reversed, the card names the woman asking, but in a more withdrawn, waiting posture. It asks whether rest has turned into holding back from something you actually want.

Things to try today

  • Take a proper break today with no guilt attached.
  • Spend ten minutes just listening, to music, birdsong or someone you love.
  • Write down one thing you've done this week that deserves a rest afterwards.

What would change if I paused and simply listened before acting?
