Context and symbolism

What The Birds is about

The Birds is card 12. Hechtel's picture shows birds perched together on a branch, and many decks show a pair of chattering birds. In the Lenormand, Birds is about conversation, chatter, phone calls and nervous energy. It's lively and a bit noisy. Some readers also link it with couples or pairs, since the birds often appear in twos. Its playing-card inset is the 7 of Diamonds.

In everyday life

In real life, Birds shows up as busy conversations, lots of messages, gossip or a slightly anxious, fluttery feeling. It's a good day to talk things through, and also to notice when the chatter is getting too much. Not every conversation needs a reply right now. If you're feeling jittery, slowing down your breathing and putting the phone down can help. Birds can also bring a lovely sense of connection. A good natter with a friend over coffee is one of life's simple pleasures. The card asks you to enjoy the chatter that lifts you, and to step back from the chatter that just makes you anxious. You get to choose which conversations you join.

Maybe your group chat is buzzing and you feel pressure to keep up. Muting it for a couple of hours won't hurt anyone.

Or you've got something on your mind and you keep turning it over alone. A quick phone call with a friend could help you talk it out.

Love, work and money

The Birds in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, the Birds point to chatter and conversation, and sometimes nerves. For example, if you're anxious before a date, talk it through with a friend. In a relationship, the Birds ask for regular, light conversation, the little daily chats that keep you connected.

At work and in study

At work, the Birds reflect meetings, phone calls and chatter. Say your day is full of calls. Block time for focused work. The Birds also ask you to watch for gossip and stick to facts. If a meeting could be an email, suggest it politely, and if an email chain is going round in circles, offer a five-minute call instead. The Birds favour communication that's light and useful, not constant noise that fills the day without moving anything forward.

With money and resources

With money, the Birds can point to talk about money, or nervousness around it. For example, if money worries keep you up at night, write them down and pick one to address tomorrow. Talking to someone you trust can also calm the chatter.

Lenormand cards are traditionally read upright. Meaning comes from the neighbouring cards, not from which way up a card lands.

Things to try today

  • Have one proper conversation today, by voice rather than text.
  • Mute one noisy chat or notification for a few hours.
  • If you feel nervous, try breathing in for four, out for six, a few times.

Which conversation would calm me down, and which one is only adding noise?
