Context and symbolism

What The Dog is about

The Dog is card 18. Hechtel's picture shows a faithful dog sitting outdoors. In the Lenormand, the Dog is about friendship, loyalty and trust, the friend who's got your back. It's one of the warmest cards in the deck. Traditionally, it represents a good friend or a reliable companion. Its playing-card inset is the 10 of Hearts. It's about the kind of support that doesn't make a fuss, it just shows up.

In everyday life

The Dog invites you to think about your friendships. Who's always there for you? Who are you there for? It's also about being loyal to your own values. And if you have an actual dog, it might be a good day for a long walk together. Loyalty also works both ways. Being a good friend means showing up when it's inconvenient, keeping confidences and being honest even when it's awkward. And it means choosing friends who do the same for you. If a friendship feels one-sided, this card might invite you to notice that too. Real loyalty feels steady, not draining.

Love, work and money

The Dog in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, the Dog is loyalty and friendship, the kind of steady companion who turns up. For example, think of the friend who drove you to the airport at 5am. Tell them how much that mattered. In romance, the Dog asks whether your partner is also your friend, and whether you're theirs.

At work and in study

At work, the Dog points to a reliable colleague or a loyal client. Say you're overwhelmed. The Dog suggests asking the person who's always been dependable, and offering the same in return. It can also ask whether you're too loyal to an employer who doesn't return the favour.

With money and resources

With money, the Dog asks whom you trust with financial matters. For example, if a friend gives money tips, be grateful, and still check big decisions with a qualified adviser. Loyalty is precious, but it's kind to everyone to keep money arrangements with friends clear and written down.

Lenormand cards are traditionally read upright. Meaning comes from the neighbouring cards, not from which way up a card lands.

Things to try today

  • Message or call a loyal friend and tell them you appreciate them.
  • Do one reliable, dependable thing for someone, exactly when you said you would.
  • If you have a pet, give it some extra attention today.

Who has been loyal to me lately, and how could I show them that I noticed?
