Context and symbolism

What The Fish is about

The Fish is card 34. Hechtel's picture shows fish swimming in water. In the Lenormand, the Fish is about money, business, trade and abundance. Fish swim freely and in shoals, so the card has a sense of flow and plenty. It's also linked with independence and self-employment. Its playing-card inset is the King of Diamonds. It doesn't say anything about your bank balance. It's about how money and resources move through your life.

In everyday life

The Fish invites you to look at your finances and your work with an eye for flow. Is money coming in and going out in a way that feels okay? Are there opportunities you're missing? It's also about independence and doing your own thing. For anything big, like investments or debts, it's worth talking to a qualified adviser. The Fish also has a lovely sense of going with the current. Opportunities often come when you're in the flow, talking to people, trying things, showing up. If you've been cut off from that flow lately, getting back out there in small ways might help things start moving again.

  • 34. The Fish

Say you've been meaning to sort out a side hustle, like selling crafts or tutoring. Setting a price list and telling three people about it could get things moving.

  • 34. The Fish

Or you're not sure where your money goes each month. A simple spreadsheet or app could help you see the flow.

Love, work and money

The Fish in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, the Fish point to independence and the flow of give and take. For example, if one of you depends entirely on the other financially, consider how that affects the balance between you. The Fish favour a relationship where both people feel free to swim, and choose to swim together.

At work and in study

At work, the Fish are closely tied to business, trade and self-employment. Say you're thinking about freelancing. Start small, alongside your current job, and see how the waters feel before jumping in completely. Track every sale and every cost from the very first week.

With money and resources

With money, the Fish are the traditional Lenormand card for income and trade. For example, list everything that comes in and goes out each month, including small subscriptions. If cash is sitting idle in a current account, compare easy-access savings rates. If it's slipping away, pick one regular cost to cut. This is reflection, not financial advice.

Lenormand cards are traditionally read upright. Meaning comes from the neighbouring cards, not from which way up a card lands.

Things to try today

  • Look at your money in and money out for this month.
  • Think of one small way to bring a bit more in, or let a bit less leak out.
  • For big money decisions, write your questions down and take them to someone qualified.

Where is my energy or money flowing well, and where has it stopped moving?
