Inconstancy Oracle Belline card meaning

Inconstancy, printed as L'Inconstance, is card 13 of 53 in the Oracle Belline, in the Moon series. Like the Moon's phases, Inconstancy describes what will not hold still: moods, plans, other people's attention. It asks for steadiness where steadiness is possible.

Context and symbolism

What Inconstancy is about

Inconstancy is a Moon card with a blustery face blowing wind across the landscape. The wind changes direction, and so does the Moon, waxing and waning every month. In the Belline, this card is about changeability: moods that shift, plans that wobble, people who can't quite make up their minds. That might be other people, and it might be you. The face blowing the wind on the card looks a bit cheeky, almost playful. That's a good reminder not to take every mood swing too seriously, your own included. Moods are weather, not identity.

In everyday life

Inconstancy is a reminder that feelings change, and that's normal. It's also a nudge to not make big decisions in a gust of mood. Let the wind settle first if you can. On the plus side, changeability isn't all bad. Being able to change your mind when you get new information is a strength. The trick is telling the difference between a real change of heart and a passing mood. Time usually helps you sort out which is which.

Say you were thrilled about a plan yesterday and today you want to bin it. Giving it one more day before you decide could save you some second-guessing.

Or a friend keeps changing arrangements at the last minute. You might plan things that still work for you even if they cancel.

Love, work and money

Inconstancy in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, Inconstancy is about changeable moods, yours or someone else's. Hot one day, cool the next. For example, if a new partner is warm on Friday and vague by Tuesday, notice the pattern without building a story around it. You can ask for clarity, and you can also decide what level of steadiness you need to feel comfortable.

At work and in study

At work, Inconstancy reflects shifting priorities or your own fluctuating motivation. Say your manager changes the brief every few days. Keep a short written log of each change and the date. It protects you and helps conversations stay calm. If it's your own energy swinging, plan important tasks for the hours when you're usually steadiest.

With money and resources

With money, this card points to fluctuation: irregular income, impulse spending, or a budget that changes with your mood. For example, if you're freelance and income swings, try paying yourself a fixed 'salary' from a separate account each month. It smooths the waves so the good months carry the lean ones.

I read Belline cards with the picture the right way up, rather than assigning a second meaning when a card is upside down. I consider its name, planetary group and any neighbouring cards together when explaining a reading.

Things to try today

  • Before any big decision today, check your mood out of ten. If it's very high or very low, sleep on it.
  • Write down one plan you've changed your mind about several times, and what's actually behind the back-and-forth.
  • Build one small bit of flexibility into your day, like a backup plan or a buffer of time.

What feels changeable around me, and what can I keep steady from my side?
