Intelligence Oracle Belline card meaning

Intelligence, printed as L'Intelligence, is card 20 of 53 in the Oracle Belline, in the Mercury series. Intelligence is Mercury at its best: quick, curious and clear. It invites you to think something through rather than react, and to enjoy using your mind.

Context and symbolism

What Intelligence is about

Intelligence is a Mercury card. The picture shows an open book with a candelabra of lit candles over it. Light and books, so it's about learning and understanding. Mercury is the planet of the mind, of quick wits and communication. In the Belline this card points to clear thinking, study and using your brain well. The candles on the card are a nice touch. They suggest learning that lights things up, not learning that weighs you down. Think of the kind of understanding that makes you go 'oh, now I get it'.

In everyday life

Intelligence is about thinking things through instead of reacting. It's also a lovely nudge to learn something, read something or ask good questions. Being intelligent isn't about knowing everything. It's about being curious, asking good questions, and being willing to say 'I don't know yet'. Some of the cleverest people around are the ones who keep learning and aren't afraid to look silly while they do it.

  • 20. Intelligence

Maybe you've got a tricky email to send and you're tempted to fire it off now. Writing a draft and rereading it after lunch might save some trouble.

  • 20. Intelligence

Or you've been meaning to learn more about something, like how pensions work or how to bake bread. Today could be the day for one chapter or one video.

Love, work and money

Intelligence in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, Intelligence favours clear, kind communication and a bit of wit. It asks whether you're thinking things through or reacting. For example, if a text from your partner annoys you, wait an hour before replying. Often the clever move is simply asking what they meant rather than assuming the worst.

At work and in study

At work, Intelligence points to learning, problem-solving and sharp thinking. Say you're stuck on a task. Break it into smaller questions and research each one. This card also encourages taking a course or reading up on a subject that would make your work easier next year.

With money and resources

With money, Intelligence asks you to learn about your finances. For example, if you've never understood how your pension works, spend an evening reading your statement or asking your provider questions. Knowledge turns money from a worry into something you can manage. I'm not a financial adviser, so check big decisions with one.

I read Belline cards with the picture the right way up, rather than assigning a second meaning when a card is upside down. I consider its name, planetary group and any neighbouring cards together when explaining a reading.

Things to try today

  • Read something for twenty minutes that teaches you something new.
  • Before reacting to anything annoying today, take one breath and ask, 'What's actually going on here?'
  • Write down one question you'd like to understand better, and find one reliable source on it.

What problem would benefit from careful thinking instead of a quick reaction?
