Theft, Loss Oracle Belline card meaning

Theft, Loss, printed as Vol, Perte, is card 21 of 53 in the Oracle Belline, in the Mercury series. Theft and loss are Mercury's shadow, the quick hands of the trickster. The card prompts sensible care of belongings, data and energy, without fear.

Context and symbolism

What Theft, Loss is about

Theft, Loss is a Mercury card with a strange little creature on it, a sort of winged mouse or bat-like figure. Mercury rules commerce, and in old mythology he was also the patron of thieves. In the Belline this card is about losing something: things going missing, energy leaking away, or carelessness letting something slip. It doesn't mean someone's stealing from you. It's more of a 'keep an eye on your stuff' card. The little creature on the card is half one thing and half another, which fits a card about things slipping between your fingers. It's sly and easy to miss, just like the small losses it stands for.

In everyday life

In normal life, this is about protecting what matters, like your belongings, your time and your energy. It's a good day to check for little leaks. There's also a softer reading of loss here. Sometimes things leave our lives, like a friendship that faded or an opportunity that passed, and we never quite let ourselves feel it. If something like that comes to mind today, it's okay to acknowledge it, and to be a bit sad, before moving on.

  • 21. Theft, Loss

Say you keep losing your keys and wasting ten minutes every morning. A hook by the door could fix that for good.

  • 21. Theft, Loss

Or you notice your evenings disappear into scrolling. That's time slipping away, and you might decide where you'd rather spend some of it.

Love, work and money

Theft, Loss in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, Theft and Loss asks what's been slipping away unnoticed: time together, attention, small affections. For example, if phones have crept into every dinner, you might agree on a basket for them during meals. It's also a reminder to protect your relationship from outside drains, like overcommitting to everyone else.

At work and in study

At work, this card asks you to guard your time and ideas. Say meetings eat your mornings. Block an hour in your calendar for focused work. Keep records of your contributions, too. Carelessness, not malice, is the most common thief, so double-check files are saved and passwords are secure.

With money and resources

With money, Theft and Loss asks about leaks and protection. For example, check your accounts for unfamiliar charges, use strong passwords, and be careful with offers that look too good. It can also point to money lost to carelessness, like late fees, which a couple of calendar reminders can prevent.

I read Belline cards with the picture the right way up, rather than assigning a second meaning when a card is upside down. I consider its name, planetary group and any neighbouring cards together when explaining a reading.

Things to try today

  • Back up your phone or important files today.
  • Check one account password or security setting you've been putting off.
  • Notice one place where your time or energy leaks away, and plug it a little.

What do I need to look after more carefully, whether possessions, time or attention?
