Malice Oracle Belline card meaning

Malice, printed as La Méchanceté, is card 32 of 53 in the Oracle Belline, in the Mars series. Mars opens with Malice, the sharp side of anger. It asks you to notice hostility around you or in you, and to respond with boundaries rather than revenge.

Context and symbolism

What Malice is about

Malice opens the Mars family. Mars is the planet of war, energy and conflict, and its seven cards in the Belline deal with friction, effort and heat. The picture on Malice is a blue jug with a lid, sitting on a stand, with a little dagger beside it. It's a slightly odd image, but you can think of it as something bitter being stored and poured. This card is about hostility and harsh words. Drawing it doesn't mean anyone wishes you harm. It's about how you handle sharpness, yours and other people's.

In everyday life

Malice might show up as a snippy comment, an online pile-on, gossip in the office, or your own irritation looking for a target. It asks you to protect yourself from unkindness and to notice when you might be passing it along. Everyone has mean moments. What matters is what you do with them.

  • 32. Malice

Say someone made a cutting remark in a group chat and it's been stewing all day. You could choose whether to reply calmly, talk to them privately, or simply mute the chat for a bit.

  • 32. Malice

Or you catch yourself venting about a colleague in a way that's getting nastier each time. Pausing and asking what's really bothering you might help more than another rant.

Love, work and money

Malice in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, Malice points to harsh words and hostility, and to protecting yourself from them. It can't tell you someone's motives. For example, if a partner's teasing has started to feel cruel, say clearly that it hurts. And if you notice yourself making cutting remarks, ask what frustration is behind them.

At work and in study

At work, Malice asks you to protect yourself from gossip and unkind behaviour. Say a colleague keeps undermining you in meetings. Keep notes of incidents and, if it continues, talk to a manager or HR. Stay professional, and don't join in office gossip yourself.

With money and resources

With money, Malice can point to scams or people who don't have your interests at heart. For example, be careful with unexpected calls asking for bank details or pressure to act fast. Check with your bank directly. Self-protection here is simple common sense.

I read Belline cards with the picture the right way up, rather than assigning a second meaning when a card is upside down. I consider its name, planetary group and any neighbouring cards together when explaining a reading.

Things to try today

  • If something unkind is weighing on you, write it down, then write what you'd say to a friend who received it.
  • Mute, unfollow or step back from one source of negativity for a day.
  • Catch one sharp comment before it leaves your mouth, and swap it for something honest but kinder.

Where do I need a firm boundary instead of a sharp word?
