Context and symbolism

What The Letter is about

The Letter is card 27. Hechtel's picture shows a sealed letter. In the Lenormand, the Letter is about written communication, like messages, emails, documents and anything in writing. Unlike the Rider, which is about news arriving, the Letter is about the message itself and its form. Its playing-card inset is the 7 of Spades. In today's world, it covers texts, emails and paperwork just as much as paper letters.

In everyday life

The Letter invites you to pay attention to what you write and what you receive in writing. It's a good day to send that email, sort that document or write down what you need to say. Writing things down can make them clearer and fairer, too. If you've got something difficult to say, writing a draft first can help you find the right words. The Letter is also about tone. Written words can be read in lots of ways, and a quick message can easily sound colder than you meant. Reading things back before you send them, and adding a friendly line, can save a lot of misunderstandings. And when you receive a message that stings, it's worth asking if it was meant the way it sounds.

  • 27. The Letter

Say you've been meaning to write a thank-you card for weeks. Doing it today, by hand, could really mean something to the person who gets it.

  • 27. The Letter

Or you've got an important email to send and keep putting it off. Writing it in simple, short sentences and hitting send could take a weight off.

Love, work and money

The Letter in the main areas of life

In love and relationships

In love, the Letter is the written word: messages, cards, notes. For example, write your partner a short note and leave it somewhere they'll find it. In dating, it asks you to take care with texts, since written words can be read many times and in many tones.

At work and in study

At work, the Letter points to documents, emails and paperwork. Say you need to send an important message. Draft it, wait, then reread before sending. The Letter also asks you to keep copies of important documents in one organised place.

With money and resources

With money, the Letter reflects paperwork: bills, statements, contracts. For example, set up a simple folder, paper or digital, for every money document. It also suggests putting money agreements in writing, even informal ones with friends.

Lenormand cards are traditionally read upright. Meaning comes from the neighbouring cards, not from which way up a card lands.

Things to try today

  • Send one message or email you've been putting off.
  • Write a short note or card to someone, just because.
  • File or sort one important document.

Is there something I need to write down, send, or read properly today?
